Beach Blanket Babylon – San Francisco Musical Comedy Show

Darlings, if you didn’t know before… well you are about to.  Beach Blanket Babylon is America’s longest running musical, and it is so much more than that.  Keep a tissue handy for tears of hilarity might ensue.

The show is a musical comedy extravaganza filled with political satire and current news spoofs, and it is flawless and fabulous. (Scroll to the bottom for examples!)  We had the great fortune of shooting a little video spot with the very talented Tammy Nelson in her giant animatronic San Francisco skyline hat.   Seeing her belt out a few lines of song was a great display of the performance power that each cast member has.

If you have never seen this show, you must!  Here are some great pictures (courtesy of their website, photos by Rick Markovich).

Fine Silver by (Producer) Penelope

Penelope Dunham, long time friend of the Big Picture and Producer for over 20 years at KGO, ABC and Dr. Dean Edell, is turning her keen eye and sharp instincts to hand-crafted jewelry.  Having recently retired from ABC, she is pursuing her hobby, creating prolifically, and selling her wares.

You can view her hand-crafted, precious metal clay jewelry at her ETSY store: http://www.etsy.com/shop/penelopespassion

It’s all very pretty stuff - it’s all made of a “repurposed” (and thus, ”green”) silver clay that is 999 silver (not the usual 925) with semi-precious stone jewel accents and occasional accents of 24k gold.  She makes beautiful pendants and earrings with geometric shapes and nature themes.

Pinot: Sonoma Dreams – Directed by Stefan Sargent

Stefan Sargent, Longtime friend of The Big Picture, and father to Producer/Editor Claudia Lang, has a lovely documentary that is currently screening at the Sonoma International Film Festival, titled “Pinot: Sonoma Dreams” or “Pinot: Escape from Wall Street.”

“Escape from Wall Street”, you ask?  Yes, this documentary covers one man’s journey to achieve a fantasy covetted by many workaholics.  He quit his job as a day trader with Meryll Lynch in New York City, to move to California and start making wine.

To quote Stefan’s regular column in DV Magazine:

One day, he wakes up in the morning and says, “Stuff this. I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.” Sound familiar?

Chucks his job. Grabs his GF and moves to CA. Re-born as a Pinot Noir winemaker.

Finds the fruit. Buys it, crushes it with his and GF’s feet (honest). Blends it, bottles it, sticks the labels on and even delivers the boxes himself.”

Stefan has spent a year following Jamie Kutch and his girlfriend in their endeavors at starting up a wine label, and the result is an inpiring visual storyabout a man and the pursuit of his dream. Click the image below to be taken to the trailer!

The Big Picture on the music scene

In going through our flickr tags, you may notice that we have had the opportunity to work with a lot of musicians over the years.  You can see our blog posts that are music-related in the musicians category.

You can find behind the scenes pictures of Metallica, Ray Manzarek, Van Halen, Rodrigo & Gabriella, One Republic and more.

We must give credit where it is due, and state that one of the nicest bands we have had the pleasure of interviewing and shooting recently was One Republic.  They were so kind and funny and everyone from the shoot reported back that they were just a delight to work with.  Not to mention, incredibly talented!  They just released some dance mixes of “All the Right Moves”, which you can check out here on Amazon.com

Here are some great pictures of George, Claudia, Teall, and Abel with One Republic and few others form our flickr “musician video shoots” stream

San Francisco Aerial Tour from Spirit Air Helicopter

Well here is an oldie but a goodie!  George Lang of The Big Picture has been some pretty amazing places with a camera.  In fact, I think there are very few places he hasn’t been!

Here is some footage he shot from a helicopter many moons ago.  I think you can guess the era by the music that accompanies the video!

For those that know the San Francisco Bay Area, it’s really fun to watch and see how the buildings and landscape have changed.
