Pinot: Sonoma Dreams – Directed by Stefan Sargent

Stefan Sargent, Longtime friend of The Big Picture, and father to Producer/Editor Claudia Lang, has a lovely documentary that is currently screening at the Sonoma International Film Festival, titled “Pinot: Sonoma Dreams” or “Pinot: Escape from Wall Street.”

“Escape from Wall Street”, you ask?  Yes, this documentary covers one man’s journey to achieve a fantasy covetted by many workaholics.  He quit his job as a day trader with Meryll Lynch in New York City, to move to California and start making wine.

To quote Stefan’s regular column in DV Magazine:

One day, he wakes up in the morning and says, “Stuff this. I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.” Sound familiar?

Chucks his job. Grabs his GF and moves to CA. Re-born as a Pinot Noir winemaker.

Finds the fruit. Buys it, crushes it with his and GF’s feet (honest). Blends it, bottles it, sticks the labels on and even delivers the boxes himself.”

Stefan has spent a year following Jamie Kutch and his girlfriend in their endeavors at starting up a wine label, and the result is an inpiring visual storyabout a man and the pursuit of his dream. Click the image below to be taken to the trailer!

The Big Picture on the music scene

In going through our flickr tags, you may notice that we have had the opportunity to work with a lot of musicians over the years.  You can see our blog posts that are music-related in the musicians category.

You can find behind the scenes pictures of Metallica, Ray Manzarek, Van Halen, Rodrigo & Gabriella, One Republic and more.

We must give credit where it is due, and state that one of the nicest bands we have had the pleasure of interviewing and shooting recently was One Republic.  They were so kind and funny and everyone from the shoot reported back that they were just a delight to work with.  Not to mention, incredibly talented!  They just released some dance mixes of “All the Right Moves”, which you can check out here on Amazon.com

Here are some great pictures of George, Claudia, Teall, and Abel with One Republic and few others form our flickr “musician video shoots” stream

The Big Picture 2009 Highlights

2009 was another great year at The Big Picture. We had the opportunity to work on a lot of great projects this year with some of our long time clients and some wonderful new ones. Though we can’t show you everything, here is a short compilation of the projects we worked on last year.

Remember to keep coming back to see some of the new projects we are working on in 2010.

Jay Maisel Documentary

http://www.thebigpicture.tv/blog/videos/SanDisk-JayMaisel.flv

In March 2008 The Big Picture had the opportunity and honor to create a documentary on living photographer legend, Jay Maisel.

Jay Maisel has been a fixture on the New York Art scene since the 50′s. He has a huge body of work that encompasses 13 books and 15 one-man shows.  He is known for his richly saturated, vibrant images that poignantly capture moments involving man, city, light and movement.  He has won several awards including the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame, American Society of Media Photographers’ Photographer of the Year Award and the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award.

We took the approach of a Day in the Life of Jay Maisel, and followed him and his camera (which is perpetually at his side) around New York City.  We were able to expose the history of the famous Bowery building which he purchased in Manhattan as his creative space.

We were amused by his practical approach to technology and digital photography – the more he could shoot in one go and carry with him the better! – and we were honored to be invited into his inspiring world of art.

One Republic – The Big Picture Interview

Musical group “One Republic” blew up last year with album dreaming outloud, with a breakout remix of “Too late to appologize” by top hip hop producer Timbaland.  We spent some time at their concert at the Independent in San Francisco and got them back stage for a short video interview which covered their musical backgrounds, a few musician’s jokes, and an update on their upcoming album.
