The Coolest Talk Show You’ve Never Heard Of
Posted by TheBigPicture in Broadcast, Staff and Crew Stories on September 15th, 2011
After watching the success of such figures as Oprah, Dr.Phil, Maury and Ricki Lake, who hasn’t dreamed of hosting their own talk show? Luckily for George Lang this dream became a reality when he got the chance to host a talk show of his own.
Since nobody had anything to do during the day, like work or go to school, his early afternoon show was an obvious hit. On a set they built themselves walked the likes of prominent community figures like the head of the library and the “how to keep your family safe” police officer you can see pictured below. Everyday George got to wear a flashy new tie sponsored by Ernst Ties, who of course got full credit. To lure in viewers the show had an amazing and exciting daily contest, whose terms we fail to remember. We couldn’t, however, forget what the grand prize was. New potholders! A prize indicated beneath the Almanac sign on the set, but due to having no mail budget if you wanted them you had to come get them yourself. Memories like these help to reinstill the life old lesson of never forgetting where you came from.
Pacific Grove Triathlon
Posted by TheBigPicture in Staff and Crew Stories on September 16th, 2010
Two members of our team at The Big Picture (Abel Machado and Mike Peters) participated in the Pacific Grove Triathlon last weekend in Monterey, CA. They were part of a three person relay. Abel did the 40k bike ride (a windy run up and down the Monterey coast) and Mike did the 1.5k swim (a unique “Kelp Crawl” through the 55 degree, hopefully not shark infested water). They both love the challenge of competing and look forward to their next event.
Rough Linen by Tricia Rose
Posted by TheBigPicture in Staff and Crew Stories on August 31st, 2010
Cherished Mum to Producer/Editor Claudia Lang, Tricia Rose has been creating lovely rough linen bedspreads, and the trend is kind of taking off.
She is featured today on the Apartment Therapy Design Showcase, click here to vote for her: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/bedroom/rough-linen-bedding-by-tricia-rose-design-showcase-2010-125838
Her website can be found here – http://roughlinen.com/press.html
A few words about her product:
There are so many influences on Rough Linen.I have always wanted to recreate the linens from my grandmother’s house in Scotland and from vintage textiles I found in France. It took years of searching to discover the traditionally woven coarse linen fabric I use in my range of bedding.
I have always gravitated to natural fabrics: wool, cotton, linen. For years I lived near Ian Mankin’s iconic shop in Primrose Hill in London and loved every fabric he stocked, including a double-width linen sheeting now sadly discontinued. Ian’s natural weaves and stripes are timeless.
Working with beautiful materials has simplified my taste and complicated my life, because I am always looking for the definitive texture, or weave, or color. When I found this linen I recognized its beauty immediately, and as I work with it I appreciate its virtues more and more: easy care, relative stability, strength, straight grain, wonderful texture.
I always cut to the thread for accuracy and fold the fabric as precisely as origami before sewing so my minimal seaming is exact. I sew French seams on the horizontal for strength and neatness, and overcast raw seams. I use the selvedges whenever I can.
Gutermann thread, YKK invisible zippers, and the simplest buttons – but the search and the temptation goes on. I am still trying to find a finer textured wide linen sheeting here in the US, but no luck so far. One day.
Pablo Cruise – Memorial Day Concert
Posted by TheBigPicture in Musicians, Staff and Crew Stories on May 7th, 2010
A lot of famous rockstars live in Marin and the San Francisco North Bay, and we are very fortunate to intimately know Pablo Cruise. They are good old friends of George Lang’s, and various members stop by the office barbeques and we even get Cory Lerios to score for us when we need music that has beauty, drama, and power in one of our videos.
So it’s a sad day today to note that original bassist/vocalist Bud Cockrell passed away yesterday. In honor of his memory, the guys are going to get together for a special concert event up at Rancho Nicasio on May 31st for a special tribute day of stories and songs.
Rancho Nicasio is west of 101 north at the Lucas Valley turn off in San Rafael, about a half hour from that turn off. Pretty simple and a beautiful ride through the redwoods, for those of you that have never been there. They have a great menu and it’s a good place to cut loose. They are going to play at 4:00 pm. You can call to make a reservation at 415-662-2219.
And, you’re urged to check out www.Budcockrell.com to see some of the letters people have written in and some of Bud’s music is there to hear. It’s really great stuff.

The Fly Girls Season Finale
Posted by TheBigPicture in Broadcast, Commercials, Staff and Crew Stories on May 4th, 2010
The Fly Girls reality show is bringing sexy back to stewardesses, or *ahem* flight attendants. We’ve worked with one of the show’s stars Nikole Rubyn on our Mobile Video commercial last April, so we’d like to admit here that we know talent when we see it.
Here is a link to what the show is about, do tune in tomorrow at 9pm central on CW: http://www.cwtv.com/shows/fly-girls
Fine Silver by (Producer) Penelope
Posted by TheBigPicture in Staff and Crew Stories on April 27th, 2010
Penelope Dunham, long time friend of the Big Picture and Producer for over 20 years at KGO, ABC and Dr. Dean Edell, is turning her keen eye and sharp instincts to hand-crafted jewelry. Having recently retired from ABC, she is pursuing her hobby, creating prolifically, and selling her wares.
You can view her hand-crafted, precious metal clay jewelry at her ETSY store: http://www.etsy.com/shop/penelopespassion
It’s all very pretty stuff - it’s all made of a “repurposed” (and thus, ”green”) silver clay that is 999 silver (not the usual 925) with semi-precious stone jewel accents and occasional accents of 24k gold. She makes beautiful pendants and earrings with geometric shapes and nature themes.
The Big Picture sponsors Rick Shafer Racing
Posted by TheBigPicture in Staff and Crew Stories on March 8th, 2010
Rich Shafer, corporate pilot for Copart and friend of The Big Picture is racing his own “late model” race car that he has built and maintained and we are proud sponsors!
Rick had raced motorcycles since he was 14 years old and had a change of heart about 5 years ago, when his son told him that racing on four wheels was safer than two. He can be found at the Petalum Speedway on several Saturdays through the end of the year. Check here for the schedule, and look for “Late Model” races: http://www.petaluma-speedway.com/images/PDFFiles/PS2010.pdf
Here are some great shots of the car – we are proud to see our logo featured on the rear quarter panel - and a great headshot we grabbed of Rick when he recently doubled as the star for our upcoming Mancini’s mattress commercial.
Benefit for Angeline Saris
Posted by TheBigPicture in Philanthropic, Staff and Crew Stories on February 3rd, 2010
Good friend of the Big Picture and talented bassist, Angeline Saris, was hospitalized in November for a blood clot formed in her left arm as a result of playing bass. To assist her with medical bills, there is a benefit on Saturday Feb 13th at the Sleeping Lady Cafe in Fairfax, and we encourage everyone to come and support her.
Please view the flier below for more information, and scroll down further to see the “Rocker Girls” video, in which she plays bass with our resident Producer/Editor Claudia Lang.

Posted by TheBigPicture in Events on October 1st, 2009
Saturday, September 19th – Abel, our director of Operations completed a century ride in Moab, Utah to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. We were proud sponsors of Team and Training, who helped him train for this event, and were excited to follow his progress.
How was this ride compared to other rides for charity that you have done?
The Moab Century was by the far the most difficult century I have ever done. Don’t get me wrong, the ride, the atmosphere, and the route were utterly amazing. But the several thousand feet of climbing was very difficult and pushed me to the limit. We started at an elevation of 4000 feet and climbed up to about 9000 feet in the first 30 miles. It was an accomplishment I will never forget.
Were you able to ride with the friends you had trained with here in the Bay Area, or was it a whole new group of people?
Riding for Team in Training was a great experience as I was able to grow as a rider and ride with a great group of people. Though our team was 8 people, we were joined by another 170 riders wearing the TNT jerseys.
What was the recovery time like? Did you have to sleep for 3 days afterwards?
After the ride, I was tired but my muscles were not sore. Riding the high altitude did cause me a lot of problems and that is what I needed the most recovery from. Breathing was very difficult and actually began to hurt as I tried to suck in air. I didn’t feel better until late the next day.
What would you suggest to someone who is trying to train to do a century ride?
If someone is planning to ride a century, I would recommend a coach or join a group like team in training. Without the support I received from the TNT coaches, I would not have developed my cycling skills and would not have been able to complete the ride.
How many times have you done these rides for charity?
This was my 3rd Charity Ride.
How did you find out about these rides and decide to participate?
I was reintroduced to Team in Training by a friend who ran a marathon with them. I realized that I could do something positive with a sport I love.
